Thursday 31 July 2025 – Sky Bar, Eltham
When That’ll Be The Day star Gary Anderson met long-time fan John Chart after a show in Bromley last year, he uttered just seven words that would set something incredible in motion:
“I want to do something for you.”
Gary recruited another long-time That’ll Be The Day fan – Astro Technology Group CTO and Founder Steve Smith – to help with the event organisation. Fast forward to this summer, and that promise becomes an exciting reality with the Voice of Legends Show & Guests, a one-night-only musical celebration hosted by Gary Anderson at the Sky Bar in Eltham on Thursday 31 July 2025. Every note sung and every pound raised will go directly to Motor Neurone Disease (MND) research at King’s College London, in honour of John’s ongoing fight.
Diagnosed with MND in 2019, John Chart is a former Territorial Army soldier and dedicated London firefighter of 26 years. He was forced to step away from duty due to the rapid progression of the disease. Today, he is virtually locked inside his body, completely dependent on full-time care from his wife, who has reduced her work to three days a week to be there for him.
And yet—his spirit is anything but confined.
“MND may possibly kill me, but it won’t have had a free run in changing my life for the worse,” says John. “Time is precious, not just now but always. So, I’m dedicated to raising awareness of this demonic disease while having the best time doing it. In a peculiar way, I thank MND for showing me how to live. Of course, I WILL NEVER GIVE UP, as is my mantra.”
The line-up for the Voice of Legends event is every bit as inspiring as John himself. Gary Anderson will be joined by fellow That’ll Be The Day performer Nikki Hechavarria, alongside Elvis tribute artist Thomas Gabbini, Steve Whale, and Astro Technology Group CTO and Founder Steve Smith—all uniting to deliver a one-night-only cabaret show packed with powerhouse vocals, nostalgia, and a lot of love.
Steve Smith says: “It’s such an honour to be part of this incredible night. Sharing the stage — even just once — with Gary and Nikki, who I’ve admired for nearly two decades, is something truly special. But to do it in support of John, whose courage leaves us all in awe — that’s the real privilege. A huge shoutout to the team at the Sky Bar as well. They’ve been incredibly supportive from the outset, and it’s the perfect venue for this event. We hope the night raises both spirits and vital funds for this urgently needed research.”
Astro Technology Group CEO Steve Hodges says: “At Astro Technology Group, we’ve always believed that innovation and impact go hand in hand — not just in business, but in the way we support people and communities. When we heard John’s story and saw the extraordinary efforts being made to support MND research, there was no question that we wanted to be involved. Sponsoring this event isn’t just about backing a brilliant night of entertainment; it’s about standing behind a remarkable individual who refuses to give up and helping to fund research that could change lives. We’re proud to play a part in that.”
John has channelled his fierce determination into a series of awe-inspiring challenges to raise funds and awareness for MND research and the Pilgrim Bandits Charity, who’ve supported him throughout:• Cycling from John O’ Groats to Land’s End on an adapted tandem (2020)• Launching the “Get Creative with MND” lemon challenge during lockdown• Competing in the Commando Speed March (2021)• Tandem skydiving over Mount Everest with arms strapped, at one of the world’s highest drop zones (2022)• Trekking to Everest Basecamp in support of veteran Hari Budha Magar (2023)• Cycling 650 miles from Newcastle to Exeter in an adapted cargo bike, stopping at every Premiership rugby stadium including Twickenham (2025)
Now, the spotlight turns to Eltham, where money raised at this charity gig will help fund life-saving research and give a standing ovation to a man who refuses to sit still in the face of adversity
